R is for R.E.M.

I loved R.E.M.  Still do.  I was devastated when I heard they broke up a few months ago after being together for 35 YEARS.  Now I have a huge regret that somehow I never saw them in concert.  An article about the end of R.E.M is here HERE.

Does anyone remember this excellent TV show?  “Stand” was the theme song:

Such a great song:

I was going to post some of the lyrics for "It's The End of the World", but I couldn’t choose.  Lyrics are  HERE.   Such a cool song:

R.E.M. was supposed to collaborate with Nirvana shortly before Kurt Cobaine killed himself.  “Everybody Hurts” came out before, but it felt related:

Their last release was “Mine Smell Like Honey” live not too long ago from their last album, Collapse into Now.

R.E.M is one of my favorite bands
I miss them already.

“Did you never call?  I waited for your call.
These rivers of suggestion are driving me away.
The ocean sang, the conversation dimmed.
Go build yourself another dream, this choice isn’t mine.”

- “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)” R.E.M.

Honorable Mention: Rick Springfield, The Replacements

P.S.  I'm going to be at the NE-SCBWI conference for the next 3 days.  I plan to comment when I can, but will make sure to visit all your blogs and return comments on the posts I missed ASAP. xo

  1. It's always hard when a band or TV show disbands, especially when they've had an impact on our lives. Great memories, though!

Have a blast at the conference. I WILL make it next year!!

    1. You HAVE to attend the NE-SCBWI conference next year. Such great authors, agents, and editors attend the conference. I met so many wonderful people and got 2 requests for partials.

  3. Ever watch HBO's Taxicab Confessions? "Everybody Hurts" was the theme song. LOVE that song. Have the CD. "Losing My Religion" is another of my favorites. Takes me right back to the early 90's and yet brings me to today. Thanks for reminding me about them.

  4. They're breaking up? What the frequency, Kenneth? I love REM! I watched the Losing My Religion video when I was a kid, and it scared the crap out of me. (A guy has a pocket in his skin) I'll always remember Everybody Hurts from My So-Called Life.

  5. R.E.M. reminds me of my childhood. As a kid, I'd fall asleep with the radio on, and their songs played often, so I think of my old bedroom when I hear them.

    Have fun at the conference!!

  6. Love R.E.M. too. They played Everybody Hurts at my best friend's funeral in high school. She was only 14 when she died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage. So R.E.M always remind me of her, which isn't a bad thing. On a more upbeat note, here's some misheard lyrics for Losing My Religion: Let's pee in the corner, Let's pee in the spotlight ... hehehe

  9. One of my favorites. Michael Stipe used to hang out in my Atlanta neighborhood when I lived there. When I was a freshman in college, our alternative music club, had REM come play. At the time, their first EP had just come out, and there were probably only 100 of us there. It was great.

  10. REM was the biggest in my undergrad days.

I do remember that show, but had to watch the credits to see that Chris Elliot was the comedian star.

Enjoy your weekend Theresa and thanks for the memories.

  13. I love R.E.M., especially "Stand." I didn't realize they were together 35 years. Wow! My hubby and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in Sept., so that means R.E.M. got together back in the old days! Cool!

  14. I remember that show. I never did watch it because Chris Elliot annoys me. But I love REM a lot.

  15. I used to confuse R.E.M. with They Might Be Giants. Think it had to do with the sound of the lead vocalists.

  16. I adore REM. In my 20s I alternated between listening to REM and U2 almost exclusively. Murmur and Life's Rich Pageant are my favorite of their albums. And I can never get enough of So. Central Rain!

Enjoy the NE-SCBWI, Theresa! I hope to get there myself some day.
