X is for XTC

I think everyone questions their faith at some point—especially teens.  The beautiful song “Dear God” spoke to my doubts:

“But all the people you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet because they don’t get
enough to eat from God, I can’t believe in you.”

Depeche Mode, who wrote songs dedicated to faith (“Reach Out and Touch Faith”) about a sixteen-year-old’s suicide, where belief didn’t ease her suffering:

XTC also sang lighter songs:

There’s nothing I appreciated more than when song lyrics gave voice to my thoughts, doubts, feelings.  I still feel that way.

  2. Songs can have such an impact. I listened to Counting Crows "Round Here" repeatedly during a difficult time in my life and it repeatedly plops me exactly into that emotional spot. Hard to listen to still.

  8. I have not heard of XTC, Theresa! I wondered what you were going to do for X though. I surely don't doubt (as you know), but will listen to the songs. I love you, pal. TWO MORE DAYS!

  9. It is nice when you find a song that says what you are feeling - sort of like when you find just the right birthday card too. :) The letter X is a tough one! Congrats on A to Z success!

  12. Hello, Theresa! I like your theme for this challenge. I'll have to check out your earlier posts! I can't believe how quickly this month went by.

  15. The older I've gotten the more of an issue this has become for me. As a teenager my faith was bedrock. Now I'm at the point where I want to believe but I really struggle.

By the way, I'd be very intrigued to see some of those YA manuscripts with a paranormal twist! I noticed your comment on my Yvonne Osborne interview and am happy I followed it back here. If you'd be interested in being my May 2012 Author of the Month feel free to submit to me! The instructions on how to do that are in my latest blog post.

  16. Something toppled me when I was a nurse. It made me look at my faith and how people conduct themselves.

Love lyrics with meaning. XTC was a good choice.

  19. This was the first band I had to listen to before I knew who you were talking about. You finally stumped me.

I like "Senses Working Overtime", but "Dear God" irked me. I don't remember why.

    Definitely haven't heard this before.

  22. I hadn't heard of XTC.
As a teen I rarely listened to the lyrics of songs. It was only until my 20s I started paying more attention, lol.

  23. I always loved Dear God and the Oranges and Lemons album came out right when I was about to start college, so I have very fond memories of Mayor Of Simpleton and King For A Day and I absolutely will stop whatever I'm doing and start singing along with Mayor Of Simpleton when I hear it!

  25. I loved XTC and Depeche Mode. I used to listen to them all the time, along with Erasure and a bunch of other synth bands. You picked some amazing ones. I hadn't hear them for more than a decade!

  26. Certain songs are for a season and speak to our need at the time. I can see why these lyrics had an effect on you in your teens. I don't know either of them, sadly, but I do now. Thanks.
