Tumbling

This is the poster that started it all…

“Burning the ground I break from the crowd

I’m on the hunt I’m after you.”

- Heneker, David William; Taylor, John. Song: Hungry like the Wolf, Duran Duran

Duran Duran broke my arm.

Let me explain.

Nicki Elson and friends are hosting the I'll Tumble 4 Ya BlogFest

Here’s the deal:

“Post a picture, video, or whatever of the celebrity you most tumbled for in the 80s. We'd also love to know just what it was that made ya tumble 4 them.”

I took the challenge literally.

Here’s how it began: I discovered Duran Duran when I was thirteen when I saw a poster of the band in Modell’s. Yes, I saw them before I heard them. My two best friends and me memorized lyrics, watched their videos until our eyes teared, and chose favorites band mates. I waffled between John Taylor and Simon LeBon.

Good video. It was filmed in Sri Lanka.

When I was fourteen I saw them in concert TWICE: once at Madison Square Garden (okay seats) and once at Nassau Coliseum in the THIRD row, center stage. (You’re jealous, aren’t you?) I was crushing on John Taylor then.

Which mullet is your favorite?

Here’s where Duran Duran breaks my arm: One of my best friends was a cheerleader. I didn’t hold it against her. She wanted me to try out for the cheerleading squad. The feminist in me wasn’t thrilled that cheerleaders tumbled and chanted on the sidelines while the boys played the game. I was even less thrilled that the cheerleaders periodically baked brownies for the players. In addition, I had never taken a dance class and was uncoordinated, so this seemed like a ludicrous idea. This didn’t stop her from teaching me the moves.

Monday was tryouts. The Sunday before, I was moving my posters around.

I was so lame, not only did I plaster my walls with their photos,
I decorated them for Christmas, AND took a picture.

I had a narrow, four-drawer, wooden cabinet that I kept papers in. I used a chair to get to the top of it so I could reach the posters near the ceiling. Said cabinet wobbled. It swayed. It went backwards. So did I. I used my left wrist to break my fall. (Did I mention I’m left handed?) Pain shot up my arm.

My sister was vacuuming in another room, so it took a while before anyone heard my cries. By the end of the day, I was a proud owner of a new cast and would spend the next six weeks having my books carried and asking people to take notes for me.

Needless to say, I did not try out for cheerleading.

While I was never one of those girls who fainted at the sight of John Taylor or Simon LeBon, I had it pretty bad. My post is proof I tumbed for Duran Duran Literally and Figuratively.

Check out the other posts HERE

I bet they’re less lame than mine.

  1. Save a Prayer is (still--I have that cd in my car) my fav Duran Duran song, and I was similarly infatuated when I was in late elementary school. I can't blame them for any serious bodily harm, though!

    1. Sarah, I had all their music on records, but never bought the CDs. After writing this post the other day, I got all nostalgic and downloaded Save a Prayer on iTunes. Glad I wasn't alone in my infatuation!

  2. Wow... That's one impressive wall! I've only ever seen its like on American television.
Where did you get the posters from?
And how do you feel about Duran Duran now? Did your fall change how you felt then?

Suddenly I'm struck by the recollection of where I first heard about Duran Duran. It was reading Dance dance dance, by Haruki Murakami.
This was before the internet convenience of being able to just look up a band in seconds... It wasn't really crucial to the story, so I just imagined what they sounded like...
Several years later somebody put some on for me, and I asked what were we listening to. I had a hard time accepting that it was actually Duran Duran and I carefully described a song of theirs asking what album it was from until I eventually realized it didn't exist. : j

    1. Now, most of the songs are just okay, but I still love Save a Prayer even though I'm not quite sure what it's about. Simon's lyrics are just too deep for me. John Taylor is still good looking, but I know he likes models, so he'll never go for me. Simon clearly didn't age as nicely, so I'm glad I didn't wind up marrying him. My husband, however, has aged well, so I really made the right choice in the end.

I'll have to look up that song. By the time Duran Duran came out with New Moon on Monday, it was never the same. They managed a couple of hits in the 90s though.

  6. I'm so much older than all of you! After the 1970s I didn't "tumble" for anyone that I could think of.

I loved the Beatles, eventually. I wasn't too interested when they first came on the scene about 1962, just after I married my first husband. They were quite the rage, though I never had posters on my wall. For one thing, posters weren't "in" in those long ago days; and for another thing, I didn't have money for such things back then.

Thanks, Theresa, for the comment just now on my blog post. You said you would advertise my memoir In the Memoir on Facebook. My publisher wanted to know if I'd be willing to do it free for two days, and today is the last day.

Hope YOU have a good Thursday!

  10. There's the age difference for you. When I was eight, my walls were covered with pictures of the Beatles. My big sister got first dibs and claimed Paul. John was already married so I snagged George and we left Ringo to my little sister. I also had lots of pictures of Leonard Whiting, Romeo in Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet. Now *he* was hot!

    1. Judy, Ringo was and still is Ringo. I bet few liked him. John and George aged the best. Those round faces don't hold up (I should know). George was the hottest.

  11. Wow, your wall really WAS plastered! Well I guess the good thing that came out of it was that you didn't have to try out for cheerleading! 12. And here's another thing we have in common. My bedroom was similarly attired. I recognize at least five of those posters. I'll have to look more closely to see if I recognize the rest.

At 12 I decided that I had to have a favorite band, so Duran Duran was it. A neighbor introduced me to them. She was into Nick. I had a thing for Simon. There was a boy at the high school named John who dressed just like John did. We girls were duly impressed (he kind of looked like him).

I never got injured, though. (I'd never have gotten up on that dresser. You're braver than me.)

I still have their CDs, and so I uploaded them to my computer. Don't listen to them, though. (Don't listen to music much at all.) Although, "The Reflex" was on the radio as I drove into work this morning (sigh).

Me, I was in love with BC (that's Belinda Carlisle) and . My girlfriend sort of looked like her, at least to me, a little better, even. She had these magnificent lips that were my first real kiss.

I looked nothing like Simon, though. Still don't.

    1. Sophia, no, it's not bad. Looking back, I find it funny that nobody could hear me calling for help too.

  77. Duran Duran saved you from being a cheerleader! I, too, waffled between Simon and John.

  79. I love that you decorated your posters for Christmas! And I love that you took a picture. I kindof wish I had a great memory like that. I had a life-size poster of Kevin Costner as Robin Hood in my room.

    1. Janet, I remember Costner in Robin Hood. Though I do have to say I'm partial to Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

  81. I was a massive Duran Duran fan in their day and I could still happily turn their music up loud now. Ouch at the arm, it's one way to remember a band!

  82. Rebecca, remember their music and their arm made me re-discover Duran Duran all over again.
