M is for Morrissey

“Driving in your car

I never want to go home

Because I haven’t got one

Anymore” *

Every time I hear those words, it makes me laugh.

Morrissey was the front man of The Smiths. Think you don’t know them? Their song is the theme of Charmed, though Love Spit Love covers the song.

The Smiths’s version is better (but no Charmed chicks):

Here they are live with “Panic”:

I thought Morrissey and The Smiths were cool then, and today I still play their constantly. Their songs still hold up. Morrissey could sing a lovely song about a girlfriend in a coma or remind us that everyday is like Sunday.

“And if a double-decker bus

Crashes into us

To die by your side

Is such a heavenly way to die”

- “There is a Light that Never Goes Out” The Smiths

Honorable Mention: Madonna, Michael Jackson, Men at Work, Madness, Mr. Mister

If you missed it and you're interested, yesterday I posted about Live Aid.

  1. Nice choice. Glad you gave Madonna a mention. Was on the fence about including her today. But I decided against it because it isn't actually her MUSIC I love, it HER. LOL

  2. I loved the Smiths, but agree with Jessica - Madonna definitely needed a nod. She shaped a lot of the style of the 80's.

  4. Never got Morrissey. I saw him once supporting Bowie - there were definitely two concerts going on that night. When Morrissey was on, his fans were at the front, Bowie fans milling around the bar. When Bowie came on, there was a complete shift in the audience. Fantastic 2nd half!

    1. You have no idea how cool you sound right now, admitting you saw Morrissey open for David Bowie. A million hipster kids just turned to dust. Myself included :)

  6. I never heard of them, but they are good. And I see you gave Madonna a mention. I am not a fan of Madonna, but I do know that many artists today got their inspiration from her music. Happy weekend, pal. :-) (((Hugs)))

  8. I LOVE Morrissey and the Smiths; strangely I have only one Smiths album, a best of, that I've had since high school and still regularly listen to. Since I loaded it onto my ipod it's even better.

  11. Ohmigosh, Theresa, you really know how to get a girl where she lives! Lah-lah-LOVE Morrissey and The Smiths! So many great memories of strolling through downtown New Rochelle (NY) with my high school gal pals singing "Panic" (Lord, we loved hollering "Hang the DJ!" given the crap we were often forced to listen to at school dances) and "Ask" and, OF COURSE, "How Soon Is Now." And I also loved Charmed (though I kinda lost interest when they finally did away with Cole). Excellent, EXCELLENT pick today! :-D

    1. Thanks, Mina. I lost interest when they got rid of Shannen Doherty. Same with 90210. Seems I have a thing for Shannen Doherty.

  12. I love Morrissey and the Smiths! Morrissey has such a unique and amazing voice. I loved "Please let me get what I want," I think his vocal is so haunting there.

  13. I was never big on either of these two, but I'll say that I prefer the Smiths version of the song as well. :)

  14. Oh great M. I LOVE Morrissey. If I feel like staring at the rain and being a maudlin little person, there is nothing better.
